Framing Decisions: What Type of Wood Do You Like? (3 of 3)

... continue ...

  • Beech: Beech is a hard, strong, heavy wood with tiny pores and large conspicuous rays, sometimes similar in appearance to maple. This relatively inexpensive wood has reddish brown heartwood and light sapwood. Quarter sliced and half round cut beech veneers are commonly used.

  • Walnut: Walnut is one of the most versatile and popular woods for cabinet making and other household projects. Walnut is strong, hard, and durable without being excessively heavy. In addition to these excellent woodworking qualities, it takes finishes well. Walnut is light to dark chocolate brown in color with a straight grain in the trunk. It is often used in 18th century reproductions.
